Winemaking

Winemaking season here in Portugal… That’s why I’m tired and have blogged little..

Yesterday I went to a Nokia Service store to do an upgrade on my Nokia’s 6630 firmware. It now has version 4.03.38 that allows me to deactivate de dual mode (3G-GSM) that was giving me some headaches on low signal areas.

Nice things on the web:

  • MediaMan – exactly what I wanted: a cd/dvd/games/books catalog with the option for a collection preview in Virtual Shelf form! 5 stars app. Too bad it is now shareware.
  • Goowy Mail – another email service that catches your eye for being in flash.
  • Mail Nation – if you really need space on your email account you should try this. It provides you 1TB (yes, 1000GB) for all your emails!

  1. Hi Vitor. I just bought a 6630 also and I already have that Firmware version but could you tell me a litle more about those problems with 3G/GSM that you’re talking about? Thanks.

  2. Sure!
Its something like this: in Porto I have great 3G(UMTS) signal, so the phone uses it. But when I’m here in the village (Marco Canaveses) the 3G signal is very weak and the phone switches from 3G to the old GSM network.

This ping-pong between 3G and GSM signal degrades battery life and sometimes makes it hard to make a phone call.

This new firmware version allows us to deal with the issue, by telling the phone to use only the old GSM network, very useful to guys like me that live far away from the civilization :)
