Fraud
Posted: August 27th, 2004 | Author: Vitor | Filed under: Internet, Personal |After seeing 2 international calls in my phone bill this month I had to format my laptop. It was the safer and faster solution I had because I keep my documents and important stuff on a different hard drive partition.
You should know that while surfing the web I somehow “got infected” by a worm that would disconnect my internet connection and make the connection – without my consent or knowledge - to somewhere in Africa to the number: 00236716012 .
For my luck, I have the habit of removing the modem cable from the laptop, otherwise instead of the 4 euros I would have paid much more…
I connect to the internet, surf 30 minutes, my connection terminates (I think its another common line drop), secretly I’m dialling to Africa and paying a fortune for every minute. I was using Windows XP SP1, with all patches, Windows Firewall, Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro updated and still this happened!!
I called to Portugal Telecom (my isp) and according to them there´s nothing I can do. There is no legislation to this kind of situations, as I imagined. For me, Microsoft has fault. It’s a Windows and/or Internet Explorer flaw or flaws.
Another reason to apply my CV to Microsoft Portugal.
