Shopping Abroad Problems

Posted: April 23rd, 2004 | Author: Vitor | Filed under: Internet, Personal | No Comments »

After seeing some beautiful photologs i decided to buy a digital camera. Sony V1 was my choice.
I´ve used Amazon.com and the great MBnet service from Sibs to make the payment. All went well until i checked my bank account. -400 euros. Thats right: minus 400 euros… But how? I had 600 euros, bought the camera that costed me 400, the math tells me that I should have 100 euros!!

After a phonecall to my stupid bank i got to know that they considered 500 euros captive. This is, they took 500 euros to pay Amazon, and took another 500 “just in case” . According to the BPI support line this is a standard procedure. I couldn´t believe it, so i pressed charge.

Because of this i was unable to withdraw money on atm machimes for 2 long days…

But BPI stroke back again on me: the day next to this episode i´ve received my new debit card (replacing the expired one). I opened the envelope and saw an orange-pink ugly thing. My reaction:

What the hell is this? A debit-gay-card? An atempt to embarrass me on the shopping stores?

p.s. I have nothing against gay people.
p.s.2. has you might have noticed, i´ve made an about page where you can know a litlle more about me. Check out the top right corner.
p.s.3 have a nice weekend!

Toothing

Do you know what toothing is?
Well, for a start i can tell you that it´s related with Bluetooth technology, that recent cellphones have, and that allows you to connect to other cellphones or devices that also have bluetooth.

A friend of mine showed me a “nice” thing you can do with this cellphone feature: we were in the classroom with 30/40 people and he picked his Nokia 7650 and activated the bluetooth. In seconds he saw on the screen that 3 other students were also with BT enabled. The next step was start sending messages to those people, who we didnt knew. They all answered and also send pictures and messages. This is great because you don´t have to spend money to comunicate with people in a range of 10m.

So back to the initial question: what is toothing?
Wired Magazine has already an article on that:

And now comes “toothing,” where strangers on trains and buses and at bars and concerts hook up for clandestine sex by text messaging each other with their Bluetooth-enabled cell phones or PDAs.

Like what happened to internet, bluetooth is now a sex-usefull technology.

Secret Window & Hands

Yesterday I went to see Johnny Depps new movie Secret Window. Let me give you some advice: dont waste your money with it! The film isnt bad, but its more a “tv movie” than a “theater movie”.

One interesting thing ive noticed: the 3 latest movies i went (Along Came Polly, The Passion, Secret Window) all passed a message of: wash you hands, literaly. If you saw The Passion of the Christ, you may remember that scene when Maria (His mother) tells Him to wash His hands before He begins lunch.

This is a very important message, and I assume you know that. Washing your hands is a very important habit of hygiene, that can avoid several deseases, and ultimatly even your life. Believe it. I realized this situation after seeing a doctor’s debate, and also after seeing that most of the people on my university’s cantine (who eat bread with there hands), doesn’t wash them.
This may seem like a strange (stupid?) warning but i wanted to do it.

Please take the time to clean up your hands before eating!
